Labour MP to speak at STOP HS2 Fundraiser

Geoffrey Robinson MP, (Labour Coventry North West) is to address Stop HS2 campaigners at a fundraising social event at the Meriden manor Hotel this Friday, 14th January.

Back in October, Mr Robinson became the first Member of Parliament whose constituency is not affected by the route of HS2 to come out in opposition and has since been joined publically by Conservative MPs Chris White and John Redwood. Mr Robinson has called for integrated high speed rail plans that would be slowed down enough to enable the new trains to use the existing rail network and said the plans would leave cities such as Coventry as ‘backwaters’

He said;
“I’m opposing it totally. The current predictions (for expected use of the line) are totally unsustainable. The present scheme is bad for everyone, except maybe Scotland. There’s a tremendous amount of support for my position building up in parliament, among the Tories as well.”

At the Stop HS2 Lobby Day in October he asked Secretary of State for Transport Philip Hammond for an Office of Budget Responsibility Review and later commented that;
“Philip Hammond refused to even try to defend the current predictions – he knows they are completely wrong. They are hopelessly optimistic.”

The event has been organised by Stop HS2 and represents a chance for people opposed to HS2 around the country to get together and meet up prior to the hard work of keeping up the campaign during the consultation. It is also to be used as a fundraiser for the ongoing work of Stop HS2, including the national convention at Stoneleigh Park on 19th February.

Tickets are £16 and can be obtained from Archie Taylor at & 024 79463844. Cheques made to Stop HS2 can be sent to 310 Cromwell Lane, Burton Green , CV8 1PL .
