John Bishop and ‘The Adventures of HS2’

Commenting on reports that comedian John Bishop sold his house to HS2 Ltd for £6.8 million, Penny Gaines, chair of Stop HS2, said
“The Government has to buy property to build HS2, sometimes because the railway or associated works will be going through the property. In addition, with strict boundaries, they may buy property from people who would otherwise be unable to sell their homes for a decade or more, because of the blight caused by HS2. This apparently includes the home of John Bishop, and as his family has been affected by HS2 it is only right and proper that he should have been able to sell it to them, for the amount it is worth.

“It is ridiculous to suggest that if you think HS2 is a bad idea then you can’t sell your house to them: the route of the line is fixed by HS2 and the government, and they don’t care what people in the affected communities think.

“The Government has swung between promising generous compensation, to claiming that value for the taxpayer is more important. The reality is that many people have had huge problems dealing with HS2, who try and make the process as difficult as possible.

“In addition to these residential properties, there are all the commercial properties which HS2 have been taking over. In many cases HS2 Ltd are taking commercial properties without compensating the business owners.”

Penny Gaines added
“The details of the properties show the sheer scale of destruction that HS2 will cause. Behind each of these properties, from small cottage to country manor, is a family who have had their lives upturned by HS2 through no fault of their own. What the figures don’t show is the immense difficulties that HS2 have caused to these people through their awkward and sometimes bizarre procedures that need to be followed for people to sell their homes through these schemes.

Countryside Campaigners and Birmingham Businesses Picket HS2 HQ

Last week, campaigners from the Steeple Claydon area went to the HS2 Ltd HQ in Bimringham to deliver a petition, asking for the HS2 CEO Mark Thurston to come and explain himself to them. They were met at Snow Hill station by business owners from Birmingham who still haven’t been paid after HS2 Ltd seized their land last year.

This is how it was reported on the TV news in the two regions.

Residents Call on Mark Thurston to Explain Habitat Clearance

Residents in Buckinghamshire are calling on HS2 Ltd CEO to come and explain what exactly is the need for starting to clear 250 acres of wildlife habitats, which includes part of a nature reserve, right at the start of nesting season. Given that there is still no design for what is meant to be going on the land, and the chances of HS2 getting cancelled altogether, they may well have a point…..

This is how it went last week

Spend the HS2 Money in the North says Aylesbury Question Time Audience

Wigan MP Lisa Nandy said she couldn’t justify HS2 to her constituents, Jacob Rees-Mogg MP said he would cancel it immediately, and with the exception of just one person there was no love for HS2 on Valentines Day, as the BBC Question Time audience in Aylesbury said the money earmarked for it should be spent in the North instead.

Ahead of Dispatches

On Monday 11th February, Dispatches on Channel 4 will be covering HS2. If the title of the programme “HS2 the Great Train Robbery” wasn’t enough of a giveaway, here Dispatches reporter Liam Halligan explains to Kelvin MackKenzie what he found.

Highlights of Terry Morgan at Lords Economic Affairs Committee

A fortnight ago, former chair of HS2 Ltd Sir Terry Morgan, admitted that ‘nobody knows’ what HS2 will end up costing, and as part of preparing the ground for either descoping or another cost increase, he warned that ‘something has to give. Here are the highlights.

The “final frontier” of the proposed HS2 route

The Woodland Trust have produced a video of Winnington Wood, one of the 19 ancient woodland directly affected by HS2.

As they say:

We are now in the final frontier of the proposed HS2 route. It’s more important than ever that we stand up together and make our voices heard.

This is your chance to stand up for trees and make sure HS2 Ltd understands that the impact of the Phase 2b route on our irreplaceable ancient woods is wholly unacceptable. Add your voice at http://www.woodlandtru.st/T2Me5

We encourage everyone to go to respond to the consultation, and thank you to the Woodland Trust for providing an easy way to do so.
