Local HS2 action groups, farmers and other people opposed to HS2 will all be lighting beacons next Monday, 28th Febraury, in a co-ordinated protest against the proposed railway.
The beacons will be lit from Buckinghamshire to Oxfordshire, Northamptonshire, Warwickshire and Staffordshire.
There are going to be about 30 beacons in total. Some of the beacons are being lit in places which are not (currently) on any proposed route.
Campaigners want to emphasize that HS2 will cause irreversible damage to the countryside no matter what route it is built along. However, according to HS2 Ltd, HS2 will not be a major factor in reducing carbon emissions.
In addition to the environmental damage, the rail route will cost about £1250 to every household in every part of Britain.
Stop HS2 urges everyone concerned to go along to their nearest public Beacon lighting, and show their support for the campaign publicly.
Please check with your local action group to see which events near you are open to the public. Unless otherwise stated, the beacons are all being lit on Monday 28th February at about 6pm (arrive from 5.45pm).
