HS2 Ltd have published details of changes to the route of Phase 1 which have been made as a result of the petitioning process in the House of Commons, which concluded last year. These are almost all relatively minor changes that do not require any land to be taken above what was originally proposed in the bill, or the additional provisions. A list of links to all the maps is below, and we strongly suggest that anyone who lobbied for these changes checks to see they have actually got what they asked for, and were promised.
The one exception concerns the area around Calvert. This is a significant change which has been made necessary due to a fundamental error in the HS2 plans published in 2010, which for years they stubbornly failed to accept. When HS2 Ltd first published their plans, they were adamant that the old Great Central Line was disused north of Aylesbury.
However, whilst passenger services on that part of the line do terminate at Aylesbury, what they had failed to accept was that the line was in use, all the way to the soon-to-be reinstated East-West link, with freight trains carrying waste from London to a waste to energy plant, and landfill in North Buckinghamshire.
Despite what HS2 Ltd first said, this is absolutely a train being used on the GCR at Calvert.
With the Department for Transport somehow seeming not to know this railway was still in use, HS2 Ltd threatened to disrupt both ends of this operation, not only in Bucks, but also where the trains are loaded in Hillingdon.
Now, they have accepted that the railway sidings will have to be moved about a mile South of their current location, at an estimated cost of £83m. These changes will not be made under the HS2 Hybrid Bill, but as they refer to an existing railway a Transport Works Act Order. Please note, there are additional changes not covered in the TWAO to the Calvert area in the list of links below, and it is expected there will be a further TWAO in the future, concerning where HS2 crosses East-West Rail.
