Pro HS2 panellist unaware of fundamental detail

At The New Economics Foundation debate on HS2, Sir John Armitt (one of the Pro HS2 panellists) makes a fundamental error by stating that HS2 would be travelling at speeds of up to 186mph. In fact 186mph is the maximum speed of HS1. In a polite interjection from the audience, Stop HS2 Campaign Co-ordinator Joe Rukin corrects Sir John by pointing out that HS2 trains would travel at up to 225mph. He also informs him that intransigence on the track design speed of 250mph has meant it can’t have curves, severely restricting the choice of route as well as making it environmentally damaging.
