Fly away HS2

HS2 was originally seen as a replacement for airport growth – but with news today of whether there should be expansion at Gatwick or Heathrow, its clear that HS2 is not the panacea to was supposed to be.

In fact, the percentage of Hs2 passenger’s who would otherwise have flown has fallen to a mere 1%.

What’s more, the Coalition’s Programme for Government pushed for high speed rail as part of a low carbon economy – but now HS2 Ltd say that HS2 will still be in carbon debt in 2086.

Demands for airport expansion continue – whether to is Boris Island, expansion at Gatwick as Nick Clegg suggests or a third runway at Heathrow.

The HS2 Heathrow link is on apparently permanent ‘pause’, the proposed HS1 link unviable: the fundamental flaws of a project rushed out before the last election are becoming ever more apparent.

  1. Lib Dem play soft cop hard cop with Camden tunnel for voter booast. Virgin decide to cease the internal flights in the UK between the few main cities indicates HS2 and DFT planning on the longer distance faster services are not present.
